According to Roland Barthes, myth is constituted by social usage—the arrival of meaning—less concerned with facts than with signification. Myths are "not content with meeting the facts: they define and explore them as tokens for something else." History evaporates before the myth, contingency and complexity are left behind. Fully naturalized, myths appear neutral, natural, and innocent. One doesn't see the motivation behind a myth, we consume them innocently, thereby plunging ourselves into a false nature. Postulating the "immobility of Nature," fixing the hierarchy of possessions, and rendering us unable to fully recognize any "other," myth as bourgeois "common sense" is almost always on the political right. Except here, perhaps. Can you say why?
